As women* who live, work or study in Brighton & Hove or the surrounding areas within East and West Sussex, we are deeply concerned about the withdrawal or absence of female-only services for survivors of sexual and domestic abuse and violence in Brighton & Hove.
Rape, sexual assault, stalking and domestic abuse are all part of a spectrum of male violence, occurring within a culture in which women and girls are frequently harassed and objectified from a young age. Truly trauma-informed support services for female victims of abuse must include single-sex provision.
We call on Brighton & Hove City Council; East and West Sussex County Councils; Sussex Police; relevant Health and Care Partnerships and Trusts; and other local funding bodies; as well as local charities and service providers, to ensure that safe, female-only services are reinstated or provided for all women and girls who need them.
*The words “women and girls” here refer to anyone whose biological sex is female, regardless of current gender identity.
